Greeting

 Prof. Toshio GOTO

Professor, Japan University of Economics Tokyo, Japan

To advance the aim and scope, an administrative body—the ICC—was established in Japan and designated the International Research Center for Centennial Management in September 2025.

Since its establishment and following the predecessor conference convened since December 2023, the Center has fostered an international community of scholars dedicated to constructing models for the sustainability of society and

corporate management. As a methodological point of departure, the Center focused on long-lived enterprises in Japan and across the globe, initiating research on companies that have survived for more than one hundred years in approximately 150 countries worldwide.

It is a known fact that nearly half of the world’s centennial enterprises are concentrated in Japan, and that more than ninety percent of such enterprises are family businesses. Based upon this empirical reality, we have come to recognize profoundly the significance of “family-ness,” in whatever form it may assume, as a foundational element underpinning the longevity and survival of both enterprises and societies.

To realize these goals, we have sought scholars from around the world who share an interest in these themes. Through regular academic gatherings, participants present and discuss their research, learn collaboratively, and strive to identify optimal forms of longevity and sustainability suited to their respective cultural, social, and institutional contexts.

Now entering its second year, the ICC aspires to further deepen research exchange and knowledge sharing. In the future, the Center intends to disseminate its findings globally and provide valuable insights and intellectual guidance to diverse nations, regions, and cultural communities.

We sincerely request the continued support and cooperation of scholars around the world. Japan, bearing both the opportunity and responsibility is committed to clarifying the underlying factors of longevity and sharing these findings with the global academic community.

We respectfully ask for your continued encouragement, collaboration, and support.

 Research Institute of Centennial Management(RICM)

Research Institute of Centennial Management was established in 2015 with the concept of "The Science of Centennial Management," with the aim of making the longevity management practiced by long-lived companies that have been in business for over 100 years a science, exploring the principles and wisdom that contribute to sustainable management, and promoting and raising awareness of enduring management. We operate a data archive on long-lived companies in Japan, conduct research and studies through 100-Year Management Study Groups and inspection tours, and report on our activities, as well as disseminate information through various lectures, to raise awareness. We encourage our members to participate in these activities, and we work together with our comrades who are making 100-year management a science.
