Exploring Management That Is Old yet New

Upcoming Events

What are we?

Today, sustainability and environmental protection are important themes in business administration, as seen in the UN SDGs.Sustainable and lean societies have in fact been practiced by long-lived enterprises in Japan throughout their long history, and have attracted academic research interest from around the world in recent years.

Since last year, international research group for long-lived enterprises (INGLLE) meetings have continued in japan, bringing together researchers from China and around the world. Based on the results of these conferences, the Research Institute of Centennial Management (RICM) has now established a new “International Research Centre for Centennial Management (ICC)” , which will mobilize a wide range of scholars from around the world who study century-old management, with the purpose to develop a universal model for sustainable centennial management. The aim of the ICC is this way to establish a universal model of Centennial management for global and business sustainability to contribute to the international community at large. The Centre will be established within the RICM, and utilize its vast amount of knowledge with ICC and researchers around the world, and to contribute to the further development of academic and industrial research on centennial management not only in Japan but also around the world.

We look forward to your guidance, support and cooperation.

Greeting

 Prof. Toshio GOTO

Professor, Japan University of Economics Tokyo, Japan

On behalf of the International Research Center for Centennial Management (ICC), I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of you from around the world and in all areas who are interested in longevity management research. This field is extremely important, but has not been studied in depth until now. In fact, almost all business people have been desperately looking for a prescription for realizing longevity management, which means that this is an area of over-demand and under-supply.

Family businesses, which account for more than 90% of business organizations that have lasted for more than 100 years, are highly influenced by families that are closely connected to the community, have a rich local color, and are highly multifaceted, with an interest in business and a strong desire to contribute to society. Therefore, research topics are broad and deep, and the following are just some representative examples: sustainable development and business succession across generations, organic integration with the local community, the balance between tradition and innovation, entrepreneurship that continues from generation to generation, business ethics and commercial spirit, the DNA of longevity management, the artisan spirit, and the adjustment and governance of internal conflicts within families.

Research perspectives include business administration, business history, family business theory, small and medium-sized business theory, psychology, sociology, family studies, and many others, making extremely interdisciplinary research possible and necessary. We need a practical perspective that is close to the field of corporate management alongside theoretical research, and we deeply recognize the importance of case studies.

In constructing a general theory of longevity management, we are eager to have people with practical experience participate alongside academic researchers, so let's start sailing together into this unknown and vast ocean.

 Research Institute of Centennial Management(RICM)

Research Institute of Centennial Management was established in 2015 with the concept of "The Science of Centennial Management," with the aim of making the longevity management practiced by long-lived companies that have been in business for over 100 years a science, exploring the principles and wisdom that contribute to sustainable management, and promoting and raising awareness of enduring management. We operate a data archive on long-lived companies in Japan, conduct research and studies through 100-Year Management Study Groups and inspection tours, and report on our activities, as well as disseminate information through various lectures, to raise awareness. We encourage our members to participate in these activities, and we work together with our comrades who are making 100-year management a science.
